Bridal Underwear from Angela Knight Lingerie
If there is one thing Angela Knight is truly famous for it has to be Bridal Underwear (follow the link to find out why!) Our exquisite range of luxurious bridal underwear and lingerie will really make you feel like a beautiful princess, a true queen of hearts and, if the fancy takes you, a rather wicked courtesan!
As bridal underwear and gorgeous wedding lingerie is a large part of what we do, we thought it would be interesting to look back at how wedding underwear has become increasingly important in preparing for the "big day".
The History of Weddings
Historically, brides were expected to dress in a manner that cast their families in the most favourable light. Brides from wealthy families often wore rich colours and exclusive fabrics, from their dress to the bridal underwear.
Over the centuries, brides continued to dress in a manner befitting their social status. The poorest of brides wore their best church dress on their wedding day with simply stitched pure cotton bridal underwear. Today, bridal underwear has become more and more important for today's bride, and bridal underwear has in itself become a feature of the wedding day.
Bridal Underwear & Wedding Dress Styles
Wedding dresses and bridal underwear have traditionally been based on the popular styles of the day. For example, in the 1920s, wedding dresses were typically short in the front with a longer train in the back and were worn with cloche-style wedding veils. Bridal underwear followed a sleek, simple line made from silk or satin. This tendency to follow current fashions continued until the late 1940s, when it became popular to revert to long, full-skirted designs reminiscent of the Victorian era, and bridal underwear became more starched and formal.
The Bride's Trousseau
Traditionally the trousseau, from the old French word "trusse" for bundle, would have contained all a young girl owned as she went off to start her new life. An integral part of a bride's Trousseau today is her collection of bridal underwear. Bridal underwear would include not only what the bride wore on her wedding day, but underwear which the bride would wear on her honeymoon. Bridal underwear today is key to ensuring that the bride's silhouette is seamless, and essentially flattering to the style of dress.
"Fit for a Queen"
At Angela Knight we consider correctly fitted bridal underwear to be a crucial element of the overall fit of a bride's wedding dress. The appropriate bridal underwear structures the body and goes a long way to creating simple, clean curves in order to enhance the female form to its fullest. Angela Knight fitted Catherine, Duchess of Cornwall for the Royal Wedding in April 2011.
